Glossary

Glossary.PixelsIn digital imaging a pixel is a physical point in a raster image, or the smallest addressable element ina display device. It is the smallest controllable element of a picture represented on the screen. Theaddress of a pixel corresponds to its physical coordinates. The term pixel is short for picture element. The small little dots are what make up the images ondigital. The screen is divided up into thousands, even millions of pixels. Each of the pixels can only be one colour at a time, however because they are so small they usuallyblend together to make different shades of colours. The number of colours each pixel can be isdetermined by the number of bits used to represent it.Colour and depth of pixelsColour depth depends on the number of bits per pixel that can be displayed on a computer screen. The data is stored in bits. Each bit represents two colours because it has a value of 1 or 0. The morebits per pixel, the more colour can be displayed. Examples of colour depth are shown below:Colour depth No. of colours1 bit colour 24 bit colour 168 bit colour 25624 bit colour16,777,216 or True ColourInstead of a film, a digital camera has a sensor that converts lights into electrical charges. A digitalcamera takes light and focuses it via the lens onto this sensor made of silicon. It is made up of a gridof tiny photosites that are sensitive to light. Each photosite is usually called a pixel, a contraction ofpicture element.ResolutionBitmap images are composed of pixels. Image resolution is basically the number of pixels per inch(PPI) in the bitmap grid. There are two aspects to every bitmap image – its size (width and height)and resolution. These two factors determine the total number of pixels in an image. The usual resolutions include:256x256 – found on cheap cameras, this is 65,000 total pixels640x480 – this is considered the “low” end on real cameras. This resolution is ideal for emails andposting pictures on a website.1216x912 – this is a megapixel image size. Good for printing pictures.
2. 1600x1200 – with almost 2 million pixels this is considered high resolution. You can print a 4x5 inchprint taken at this resolution with the same quality you’d get at a photo lab.2240x1680 – found on 4 megapixel cameras – the current standard; this allows larger printed imageswith good quality for up to 16x20 inches.4064x2704 – a top of the line digital camera with 11.1 megapixels takes pictures at this resolution. At this setting you can create 13.5x9 inch prints with no loss of quality.Resolution has a huge impact on an image. For example, in Photoshop we usually have to adjust theresolution levels so the image is the best quality possible. If the picture has low resolution, it’ssometimes very clear to see and noticeable. If you don’t adjust the resolution or take a poor qualityimage then the pixels will be really visible.Screen ratiosThe aspect ratio of a screen or image describes the proportional relationship between its width andheight. It is commonly expressed as two numbers separated by a colon. For an x:y ratio, no matterhow big or small the image is, if the width is divided into x units of equal length and the height ismeasured using this same length unit , the height will be measured to be y units. In still camera photography, the most common aspect ratios are 4:3, 3:2, and more recently found incameras 16:9.This is important as many DSLR’s are being used to shoot video due to the quality oftheir internal sensors and superior lenses.Frame rateFrame rate, also known as frame frequency is the frequency (rate) at which an imaging deviceproduces unique consecutive images called frames. This term also applies to film and video cameras, computer graphics, and motion capture systems. Frame rate is usually shortened to FPS (frames persecond)The human and its eye interface, our visual system can process 10 to 12 separate images per second.Video Formats.A video formats defines the way in which video is recorded and stored. It normally specifies: Codeccompressor, frame rate, frame size, frame aspect ratio, pixel aspect ratio, and scanning method.Common formats are DV, HDV and AVCHD. Tape based formats like DV and HDV can be transferredto a computer for editing via FireWire whereas file based formats such as AVCHD are already storedas files and can be transferred to a computer for editing via a USB or a card reader.CompressionCodec is short for coder decoder and describes the method in which video data is encoded into a fileand decoded when the file is played back. Most of the video is compressed during encoding so theterms codec and compressor are often used interchangeably.

HA6 - Task 6

HA6 - Evaluation

The HA6 Assignment was to create an e4 sting. To do this we were given six tasks to complete in order to create the ident. The tasks varied on how big and small the work was. This assignment was one of the bigger assignments I’ve had to do as there was a lot of thorough and detailed research based work to be done.
Task 1
Task one was fairly simple as I just had to produce a production log, planning how long I predicted the work would take me and when I could have it finished by. I didn’t really plan my work load out as well as I could have as the work didn’t get completed on time therefore I had to add onto my plan and strike out my first deadline and replace with an increased one. It turned out that my work didn’t get completed on the deadlines I had on both my first draft plan and the final draft as I didn’t finish the article and evaluations in time so my other work had to be put on hold so this delayed the work process.
Task 2
For the second task we had to go on the e4 website and view previous e4 stings to get an idea of what they look for in their stings. After researching I then had to create mood boards and talk about previously used e4 stings and what I liked about them and if I was to change anything what I would do. I changed my mind a few times as I viewed more example e stings, I couldn’t decide whether I wanted my e sting to be detailed or quite simple so the audience’s attention would be solely on the e4 logo or whether this would make it too boring.  By looking at the e4 website it gave me a good idea of what sort of things could be done and how they can vary and opened up my mind to more creative designs. I then had to blog all of the research I had done as evidence.
Task 3
After viewing and researching previous e4 e stings and what type of things was required, I then had to create my own ideas generation and come up with a few rough ideas so I had a variety to choose from when it came to picking my final idea for the e sting. Personally I found this task quite a tricky one as I didn’t really have a clue how I would create the things I wanted to but then I realised I would be using a few software’s and pretty much anything would be able to be created. I then went through my idea generations with my tutor and we expanded on my ideas and then blogged them ready to go back to when I moved onto task 4, the storyboards.
Task 4
For task 4 I had to narrow down my ideas. I chose two of my strongest ideas and made them into storyboards. I then looked through them and chose which storyboard I preferred. After I had chosen my final storyboard I had to find images on the internet to get ideas to create the idea. I then again spoke to my tutor and we went through the run cycles I had found on the internet and decided which would be best to trace on Illustrator. We chose the Hare run cycles. I decided this was the best one to use as it’s quite unusual and after doing research on previous e4 e stings that is what the channel like. My other options were using a person or a different animal or even an object. I then blogged all of this on Blogger as evidence. The next stage of task 4 was to open up the run cycle in Illustrator and trace all 5 of the hares for my sequence. This took around an hour or two to do and then add things and erase parts that weren’t needed/didn’t look right. When that was complete I then brought the e4 symbol in and added different background colours to see how it would look. I decided on a grey background and leaving the hares with just a black outline as I wanted the sole attention to be on the e4 symbol and the hare running. To put my sequence into practice I opened it in Photoshop and tested the sequence, when played it works really well. I had to change the sequence to different movements every 0.1 seconds instead of 0.2 as it was too slow and didn’t look right. Once this was complete I moved onto Flash. I opened my work in Flash and put each hare on a different layer. I moved them all to the specific place they should be so the sequence works. I had to make different layers and put specific times in so they played at the right and selected time. I then played the sequence to see if it looked right.
I experienced a few problems when it came to exporting the sequence out of flash as the sequence was all grainy and didn't work so we had to upload it to Moodle instead and then at a later time export the sequence again and see if it works, however it will be a bit more time and trickier than first thought.

HA6 - Task 5

I had to bring my five hare traces into Flash so I could create the sequence and bring it more to life. As you can see above at the top of the screen there is a box where I change the times the hare moves and how fast it moves. I had to edit these for all five so they move the way I need them to and at the right times.

Once all the hares had been timed in and out correctly I then had to bring the e4 symbol in. In my sequence the e4 chases the hare and then the hare chases the symbol and then they both go off screen and the e4 symbol splats into the center of the screen as the ending. This was relatively easy to do as I just had to again create motion tweens so it was timed correctlty. I then had to change the timings a bit as the hare ending up running with the hare and it had to be infront of it.

HA6 - Task 4

2.

Final Chosen Storyboard.

For this idea I plan to add little changes to it when bringing my ideas to life by changing the person being chased to an animal to give my e4 ident that dream like quality. I chose a hare to trace on Illustrator. I found the image below on the internet, the image features 5 hares each with slight different movements. When pieced together this will produce the hare running like my idea shows.

Process.
First I had to open the above hare template in Adobe Illustrator and then I had to one by one trace other them for my work. I did each hare on a different layer each. Below are the finished traces of the hares. I then put these together to see how they work together and for my sequence, I did this on Photoshop, you can see this with the printscreen below. I then went back to Illustrator to test background colours against the hares and then brought in the e4 symbol to see how they all go together and if it would look right.

HA6 - Task 3

Rough Ideas for E4 Ident. •Loads of 4 symbols dropping from the sky and the falling flat on the ground and then shooting back up and landing in the centre of the screen. •A 4 symbol flying into the center of the screen from the left hand side and then splatting on the screen after afew seconds. Two objects infront of a white background and then suddenly form into an E and a 4 and coming together in the middle of the screen.

HA6 - Task 2

Previous E4 Idents.I have chosen three e4 idents to look at and see how they vary from eachother. I am doing this to see what kind of style e4 usually go for whencreating/picking their idents so I can get ideas for when I start to create myident.E4 ident 2007 End of ident. In this ident everything is moving at a fast pace and we the wall in our viewgets decorated in purple, which is the colour used to represent e4 and the e4logo comes up against the wall. Then from the living room we see drawersopening by themselves and showing bright colours, I presume this is to keepthe audiences eye and attention from drifting. There is a lot going on for a twentysecond ident. Then towards the end wesee computer generatedimagery and it’s a garden in the living room with the e4 in centre screen. Itlooks fun and interesting.E4 Ident 2009End of IdentThe second e4 ident I looked at is somewhat similar to the one above asthey’re both re-creating a room in a house. First of all, we see what look likegarage doors opening and then storage boxes coming out of them; the boxesare covered in e4 logos. The boxes then open and kitchen utensils etc. comeout of the boxes. As you can see in the print screens above, the e4 colour, purple, is used throughout. I like how everything is happening quite quickly asthis captures the audience’s attention and as the ident is 30 seconds longs so the ident has to be exciting and different so they don’t lose their attention. Then half way through the ident we see drums and music speakers comingout of a van. I think the whole point of the ident is by showing kitchen parts, parts of a living room and then the music is to show that it’s a channel that hasa chilled out vibe to it and it’s also creative with lots of things happening, andthen the music because that’s a big part of e4 as a whole.E4 ident 2011.End of ident. This e4 ident is one of the most recent ones. It’s extremely short and is onlyon for 10 seconds. This is extremely cartoon like and because of how shortthe advert is your attention doesn’t really drift. I like how just the logo is in colour, it makes it so much more noticeable. However because of how bluntand sharp the other images are in the background, they’re still just equally asnoticeable. Over all I prefer this ident out of them all as it’s simple but yet tome the most effective.
